Bathroom Remodels in Winter Park, FL

Winter Park has some of the best houses in Central Florida and some of the worst bathrooms. Beautiful homes on great streets still have builder-grade showers, exposed toilets and plastic tub surrounds. Here are two Winter Park bathrooms we remodeled, what we changed and why, and what a bathroom like each one costs.

In short: a guest or powder bath here usually starts around $25,000, a primary bathroom around $40,000, and a primary with slab stone, a freestanding tub and a new layout runs well past that.

1. Winter Park: a primary bath with slab marble and a real water closet

The old layout put the toilet out in the open with no privacy. We gutted the room and built a dedicated water closet, so the toilet finally has its own space.

The centerpiece is the walk-in shower next to a freestanding soaking tub, both wrapped in full slab veined white marble that runs from the tub surround across the shower walls and into the floor, with no grout lines breaking it up. Frameless glass, brushed gold hardware, a recessed niche, a hexagon mosaic shower floor, and a ceiling-mount rain head with a handheld wand finish the shower.

What drives the cost: full slab stone is one of the most expensive finishes in a bathroom, because it is priced by the slab and has to be templated, fabricated and set like a countertop. Moving the toilet into a new water closet adds framing, plumbing under the slab and electrical. This one came in around $60,000.

2. Winter Park: a powder bath built around one piece of stone

Small room, big decisions. The centerpiece is a floating red marble vanity with an integrated sink carved from the same stone, veined in pink, gray and white, with a brushed gold faucet set right on the stone. Behind it, handmade zellige tile in warm bronze and earth tones runs the full width of the wall, and a custom backlit asymmetrical mirror wraps the corner.

What drives the cost: a powder bath has no shower, so the money goes into the pieces you see. A carved stone vanity, handmade tile and a custom mirror can cost as much as a full guest bath. That is the trade: fewer square feet, higher finish per square foot. This powder bath came in around $40,000.

What to know before remodeling a bathroom in Winter Park

  • Plan for a permit. Most bathroom remodels that touch plumbing, electrical or the shower need one, and the work gets inspected as it goes. Our permit guide explains what to expect.

  • Older homes hide surprises. Many Winter Park homes are decades old. Plan a cushion for what turns up behind the walls and under the floor.

  • Fix the layout while the room is open. An exposed toilet, a cramped shower or a tub nobody uses are cheapest to fix during the remodel, not after.

  • Stone and handmade tile are worth it in the right spot. Put the big finish where you see it every day, and keep the rest simple.
